Basil, not just a school in Switzerland

sweetbasil.jpg

So here’s the deal, I have never been able to grow anything, not that I ever tried all that hard. I am mostly an indoor kitty, I work, I draw and I read, I tend to go out at night. I know what you must be thinking, vampire right? Sorry not that interesting.

Gardening has never been a huge priority for me, mostly because I have never had a yard, or much of one at least. Now that I live in the great vastness of the country I feel compelled to make at least something grow. It seems to be the highlight of summer out here and I am compelled to fit in, acquaint my self with local tradition and eventually be invited to every BBQ in town! I am almost there but I think making something grow of my own accord will definitely help get my foot in the door.

I have decided to start small. In a pot to be precise, I still have no idea what’s lurking in that grass out there. So without further adieu I would like to introduce you to my newly sprouted basil! It’s actually growing! I am kinda proud of myself. The trick was ignoring it. I totally forgot about it and voila! there it is! I can’t wait for it to get bigger so I can pretend I am actually going to cook with it too.

  1. Haha ~ a girl after my own heart. I planted my very first garden this year and now I’m just keeping my fingers crossed, hoping that something, anything, will grow.

But then, will I have to cook these veggies?

Good luck with Basil. He’s a cute little fella. ☺

  2. The only thing I was able to keep alive for years was a banana tree (never with any bananas on it!) try that, you’ll be great at it if you’re anything like me!

So excited to see Hushabye is already out, I’ve ordered some and just waiting to get my hands on it.

  3. Congratulations! Basil is yummy and you don’t even have to cook with it! Just make pesto. :o )

  4. Way to go! Basil sounds like something I could grow, because I usually forget about my plants too : )

  5. We all have to start somewhere. . .you little farmer, you!

  6. love basil! It’s so nice to have it fresh on hand because you can throw it into pretty much anything and make it taste gourmet. I have some good recipes if you are interested.

Love the IKEA pots too. I have several.

  7. That’s awesome!! Good for you! But, I have to ask – did you sprinkle the whole seed packet in there?? That’s a bunch of little basil seedlings coming up in one little pot!

  8. way to go! congrats. Basil is fairly easy to grow. next try chives, mint, rosemary; these are all fairly easy to grow too (at least in S FL). good luck. I’m almost finished making a Lila Tueller purse with your fabulous forest moon fab. wish I had bought more…love the owl fab and I only got FQ’s so only about 2 full owl per FQ :>( LOVE your fabs!

  9. I did indeed dump the whole thing in there, Rebecca! Hey I am just doing what the man says.

  10. Basil is delicious! Next year, plant some tomatoes plants and add a basil plant next to it. You’ll never get over the flavor of the tomatoes!

    By the way, Happy Birthday!!

  11. That’s really funny!! I am kinda the same way with growing things but I do keep trying!! Good Luck!! I am wondering about the totes you made a few posts back, I know the giveaway is over but I love the pattern And would love to make my own. Would you mind letting me know what pattern it is and maybe where I could find it?

  12. With your lovely basil leaves make these.
    A Sandwich
Pick a nice seedy bread and toast two slices.
Make your favorite recipe of egg salad.
Put fresh basil leaves on top of that covering the egg salad.
Put several pieces of fried bacon on top of that and cover with
the other piece of toast, slice and serve…oh my yummy, yummy.

    A Pizza
Make your favorite pizza dough, spread with your favorite marinara sauce, cover lightly with fresh basil leaves, dot heavily with fresh mozzarella…bake and serve up a simple but yummy pizza.

I may have to add those simple recipes to my blog spot, they are two of my favorites. Love them both, enjoy your basil! I live in Dubai, UAE and have it planted outside, so I get it year around, fresh. Of course you can also make pesto which is easy too, many many recipes on line and you can use pesto for many purposes…fish, pasta, chicken, sandwiches. Experiment and surf!

  13. I forgot one thing about the pizza….you can also use your favorite dough, brush with olive oil, cover with slices of fresh tomato…roma’s are best, then add the basil and some mozzarella…another simple delicious winner!
